When Salem Baptist Church made settlement on the St. John of the Cross buildings and property earlier this year, the trophy case in the school’s front door entrance (Woodland Road) lobby still was filled with over 150 CYO trophies and awards spanning the years 1985 through 2013. Since the new owners were preparing to start some major renovations inside the school building in June, there
was an urgent need to remove the contents of the trophy case at that time.
Even though the archdiocesan CYO program is parish (and not school) based, members of the school board at Good Shepherd Catholic (GSC) School – the regional school created by the merger of Queen of Peace and St. John of the Cross Schools – decided to take possession of the trophies and awards housed in the case to honor the achievements of St. John’s CYO teams.
While GSC would like to keep a sampling (i.e., “a few”) of these trophies for any “legacy school/parish” displays we will construct in the future, we do not have the room to store all (nor even most) of this hardware that countless and dedicated SJC players and coaches earned with their blood, sweat and tears. Plus, we recognize that the emotional/sentimental value of these awards rests more with the achievers than it does with current and future GSC students.
Therefore, if you are interested in taking ownership of one or more of these prized possessions (see the accompanying list/three pages of 144 available items), please plan to come to Lynaugh Hall (under Queen of Peace Church) on Saturday morning, September 15 and/or September 22, between 9:00 and 11:00. The entrance to the Hall (Religious Education Center) faces Fitzwatertown Road. There is NO COST to claim/receive/take a trophy.
Thank you for your interest and support! Questions? Call Charlie Bennett (Board Vice Chair) at 215-887-7552 or email [email protected].
